Which Hockey Group Is Right for My Child?

We know the registration categories can be a little confusing, especially with a few changes to how we're structuring things this season! Here’s a quick guide to help you choose the group that will be the best fit for your child.

-Learn to Skate-

For children who are just getting started on the ice.

This group is for beginners who are still learning the basics of skating. No hockey experience is necessary! We’ll focus on balance, stopping, turning, moving forward, and becoming comfortable on the ice.

-6U / Developmental Mites-

For our youngest players and beginning hockey players.

6U and Developmental Mites will practice at the same time, but players will be divided into two groups based on their skill level and understanding of the game.

Choose this group if your child:

  • Is young enough that they are still developing basic skating skills
  • Is just beginning to understand hockey
  • Can skate but is still learning how to play the game
  • Is ready to start learning hockey skills but isn't quite ready for structured gameplay

Within this group, players will be separated into:

Beginning/Introductory Group

For children who are still working on skating skills, are very young, or are just beginning to understand the concept of hockey.

Developmental Group

For children who have some skating ability and have started to understand the basics of hockey — following the puck, knowing where to go, listening to coaches, passing, shooting, etc.

Don't worry if you're not sure which side your child belongs in! Coaches will help determine the best fit once we see the players on the ice.

All other groups are based solely on the age of the player, as of December 31st.

Still Not Sure?

That's okay! You don't need to be a hockey expert to register your child. If you're unsure which group is the best fit, choose the category that sounds closest to your child's current ability and our coaches can help determine the best placement.

Our goal is to make sure every player is learning, having fun, and practicing with a group where they can be successful.

Special note: 10U and 8U will practice together this season to make the most of our available ice time. Players will still receive instruction appropriate for their age and ability.
